From coil to precisely cut and perfectly stacked sheets

From continuous strip to finished sheet

Cut-to-length (CTL) and stacking units are used throughout metal strip processing wherever continuous strip or coil needs to be cut into defined sheets – reliably, precisely and in full synchronization with the overall production line.

The modules can be implemented either inline within a continuous processing line or offline as a stand-alone unit.

Cut-to-length and stacking is often underestimated: it is not a single operation, but a highly dynamic process in which strip guidance, cutting, acceleration and handling must be perfectly synchronized.

A typical CTL and stacking process includes:

  • controlled strip advancement using pinch roll units
  • precise strip guidance through strip centering systems
  • accurate cutting using a cut-to-length shear with redundant length measurement
  • controlled sheet acceleration to create a defined gap after cutting
  • material-friendly handling and sheet transfer and
  • controlled sheet stacking using lifting systems

Stacking is tailored to downstream process requirements, including the integration of pallets, interleaving layers or protective materials as well as defined stacking orientation and quantities.

The result: dimensionally accurate sheets, cleanly stacked and ready for immediate further processing or storage.

Where performance is lost in cut-to-length and stacking processes

In practice, the challenge is rarely the cutting itself – it is the interaction of all process steps.

This is where performance losses typically occur:

  • Sheets meet length tolerances, but show surface damage or sheet deformation caused by uncontrolled handling
  • The unit is running, but fails to stay synchronized with the overall line speed
  • Product changes and varying sheet lengths lead to unstable cycle times and reduced throughput
  • Manual intervention becomes necessary when automation and control systems cannot reliably cover all operating conditions

The consequences: downtime, inconsistent quality and a process that never reaches its full potential.

As demands on quality, speed and flexibility continue to increase, cut-to-length and stacking units become a critical factor for overall line performance.

How we ensure stable and high-performance cut-to-length and stacking processes

Whether implemented inline or as standalone units, cut-to-length and stacking systems are always engineered as an integral part of your entire production process.

Our approach is simple: understand the process, develop the optimal process concept and align every step accordingly. Each element is engineered to work seamlessly within the overall system, ensuring consistent quality and performance:

  • End-to-end process design
We analyze strip speed, sheet lengths and product mix to define a fully synchronized cycle
  • Stable strip guidance and precise positioning
Pinch roll units ensure controlled strip advancement, while strip centering systems guarantee consistent strip guidance throughout the process
  • High-precision cutting
The cut-to-length shear is designed and integrated to match material properties, required output and cycle requirements
  • Controlled sheet separation
Each sheet is accelerated after cutting to create a defined gap – ensuring stable transport and collision-free sheet handling
  • Surface-protective handling and stacking
Brush rolls, rubber rolls, suction systems or grippers ensure reliable, material-friendly handling
  • Accurate sheet stacking
Sheets are stacked in a controlled manner using lifting systems (e.g. scissor lift tables), including full integration of pallets and interleaving layers according to your logistics requirements
  • Customized shear and buffer concepts
Flying shears or loop pits ensure continuous operation, even during cutting interruptions
  • Flexible and modular design
Options such as quick-change shears or backup stacking, ensuring high availability and operational flexibility
  • Performance and utilization analysis
We evaluate system capacity to achieve the optimal balance between investment, flexibility and output
