

Challenges in Coil Handling and Typical Applications
In the metal strip processing industry – particularly when working with non-ferrous alloys – the strip head end often proves to be a critical factor in stable strip production. High residual stresses can cause the outer strip layer to stick tightly to the coil, making feeding into downstream lines difficult. As a result, the coil cannot be opened safely or fed into the line in a controlled manner.
This situation is familiar to many operators and typically leads to:
- Manual bending or shaping of the strip head end using auxiliary tools
- Increased physical strain and a higher risk of injury
- Longer setup times during line preparation
- Inconsistent process quality, as bending angle and handling depend on individual experience
At strip thicknesses of around 3.0 mm and above and depending on the alloy, high residual stresses often make it difficult or unsafe to release the strip head end manually.
A coil opener for controlled strip head end preparation is used to address these challenges and to complement existing coil handling and feeding equipment.

Such a coil opener replaces manual intervention with a semi-automatic, force-controlled process. Its function is not limited to a single step but rather supports a structured and reliable preparation sequence.
- Securing the Strip Head End
The unit moves into position at the coil and stabilises the outer strip layer, allowing the strapping to be released safely. Any sudden movement or spring-back of the strip is controlled, ensuring operator protection.
- Controlled Contact with the Coil Surface
Rollers are applied to the coil surface with controlled force. This force is adapted to the specific material and coil characteristics, allowing even lightweight or sensitive coils to be stabilised without being displaced on the coil support.
- Fixation and Controlled Bending of the Strip Head End
A defined section of the strip head end is held securely and positioned for bending. The bending angle is set in a reproducible, material-specific manner, matched to strip thickness and material grade.
- Transfer to Downstream Processes
After bending, the prepared coil can be safely transferred to downstream equipment such as coil car. Material flow remains structured, ensuring a smooth transition to the next processing stage.


The real benefit of a coil opener becomes apparent in daily operation. By systematically performing the individual steps involved in preparing the strip head end, it creates a well-structured overall process that eliminates typical pain points. Tasks that previously required physical effort, experience and additional time are transformed into a controlled and consistent workflow.
Operators no longer need to lift, pull or manually shape the strip head end using tools. This significantly reduces physical strain and minimises safety risks when handling tightly wound or highly stressed coils.
At the same time, preparation time is reduced. The coil is made ready for further processing more quickly, line setup becomes more reliable and overall process efficiency improves – an important advantage for lines operating at high throughput or in continuous 24/7 production.
The quality of the bent strip head end is independent of the operator. Defined, material-specific parameters ensure consistently high bending quality, improving process reliability and reducing unplanned downtime.
Thanks to its flexibility, the coil opener can handle different coil geometries and material properties. This is particularly important when processing non-ferrous alloys, which often have high residual stresses. Due to its flexibility, the unit can therefore be integrated into both existing installations and new strip lines.
Another advantage is seamless integration into existing process chains. Whether used in coil storage areas, rolling mills or strip feeding systems, the coil opener supports stable material flow without disrupting established workflows.
